The competition challenges participants to design a memorial at a former nuclear test site, serving as a reminder of the immense danger and lasting impact of nuclear weapons on humanity. A key requirement is that submissions must rely entirely on visual representation, without explanatory text, making the strength of the imagery and conceptual clarity paramount.
The Rainbow of Renewal proposes a monumental 200-meter circular structure set within former agricultural fields in India that were once used for nuclear testing. The structure functions as an irrigation system, spraying water into the air. As sunlight refracts through the water droplets, a rainbow emerges above the site—a powerful and poetic symbol of remembrance, healing, and transformation. The ephemeral beauty of the rainbow contrasts with the site’s dark history, serving as a visual reminder of both the destruction caused by nuclear weapons and the possibility of renewal.
Beyond symbolism, the project actively contributes to ecological recovery. The irrigation system fosters the gradual regeneration of the land, transitioning the fields into natural wetlands and native vegetation. This transformation represents a return to the land’s original, untouched state before human intervention and nuclear devastation. By allowing nature to reclaim the site, The Rainbow of Renewal becomes not just a memorial, but an ongoing process of healing—an evolving testament to resilience, recovery, and the delicate balance between destruction and renewal.
